Agrace Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Janesville

‘It Was Everything’

Inpatient Hospice Care in Janesville Celebrates 10th Anniversary

On a quiet neighborhood corner in Janesville, nestled among gardens full of native grasses, is the Agrace Center for Hospice & Palliative Care. Outside, neighbors walk dogs and kids ride bikes along its lengthy stretch of sidewalks. Inside, something profound is happening—every single day.

For a decade now, area residents have come through Agrace’s doors in Janesville to receive specialized end-of-life care. Families spend precious last days together, soaking in the support they need. Some return later for grief support, to work toward healing.

Susan Bresser of Waukesha says she and her family were greeted with compassion and understanding when her father, John, was a hospice patient at Agrace in Janesville. John had dementia and had been receiving hospice care while living in a care facility. But as his needs grew, it became clear that he needed a higher level of care, and he was admitted for inpatient care at Agrace.

Agrace Hospice Care primarily provides care in patients’ homes, but sometimes patients’ symptoms become too complex or urgent to manage at home. That’s when the Agrace campus in Janesville is so vital. There, patients like John can receive short-term, general inpatient care—like what happens in a hospital, but in a setting that feels more like a home. The campus also welcomes residential hospice patients who pay to live at Agrace while they receive hospice care.

‘It Was Just What He Needed’

Our Janesville clinical team is specially trained to deliver dignified care for patients struggling with complicated, life-limiting diseases like John’s dementia. Susan Bresser remembers, “It was just what he needed … it was what we needed.”

Coming from a big family that enjoys laughing and singing together, Susan says it was comforting—even surprising—that her family didn’t have to worry about being too loud or overstaying their welcome while visiting John at Agrace: “We just ‘moved in.’ We took turns coming in and spending time with Dad and one another, and it
was everything.”

Miranda Wastak, manager of the Janesville inpatient unit, notes, “A favorite part of my day is seeing the relief wash over our patients and their families when we’re able to get their symptoms under control so they can have meaningful moments together.”

Since 2014, thousands of hospice patients and their families have called Agrace in Janesville their “home,” whether for hours, days or months. Thank you to the forward-thinking, generous community partners and donors who have made this haven possible.

Raising the Bar on Care

While more than 90 percent of families Agrace Hospice Care serves would recommend us to others, there is always room to improve in health care. That’s why each year, our Quality Committee completes several projects that may improve patient care—often based on surveys of past-served families.

Dozens of staff from all parts of Agrace contribute their ideas and perspectives throughout the year, as we aim to raise the bar on patient care. Here are some recent results:

  • We improved our “goals of care” training to help our social workers and nurses talk candidly with patients and families about what is working for them, what they are wondering about, and their worries and wishes. Those answers lead to more individualized care.
  • To help patients and their families manage better between our visits, we built a new care tips web page. It’s for anyone who becomes a caregiver without any experience in health care, let alone in end-of-life care.
  • We created a brief training video that shows family caregivers how to soothe a hospice patient who is agitated or restless. These are common symptoms as people near the end of life. You can watch the video here.

This year, we’re improving training on pain management, which is certain to benefit both patients and their families. Agrace works hard to bring you authentic, high-quality care, so it’s easy for you to support us and choose us when your loved ones need hospice care.

Honor a Loved One with a Memorial Butterfly in Madison

agrace madison memorial walkYou can be one of the first to honor a loved one with a butterfly along Agrace’s Memorial Walk in Madison. This summer, Agrace is adding locally crafted iron trellises alongside our brick walkway to complement the woods, pond and fountain. This peaceful oasis is a place where you can take in nature’s beauty while you reflect on memories of loved ones.

Each personalized butterfly purchased to fill these trellises is a gift that will bring comfort and hope to those who visit Agrace’s campus, and help us bring compassionate care to dozens of area communities.

You’re welcome to join us to dedicate new tribute butterflies—and new engraved bricks being added to the walk—during a ceremony in August. Butterflies are returned to you after one year as a keepsake, or you can keep them on the Butterfly Memorial trellis with an annual sustaining gift.

The last date to gift a butterfly in Madison and be included in the 2024 Dedication Ceremony has been extended to June 30.

To encourage more new volunteers to give Agrace a try, we’ve made our volunteer training more convenient than ever before. What can you expect in this role? Karen Zenor, a patient-care volunteer with Agrace, recently gave us some insight into her experience.

Karen Zenor, Volunteer

Why did you choose to volunteer with Agrace?

I was looking for a way to serve others in a volunteer capacity, and I had heard very good things about the organization.

What has your experience been like so far?

It’s been pleasant and rewarding. My volunteer coordinator, Laura, is supportive and encouraging. Agrace provides education and a framework of support that is reassuring when you’re with patients. Spending time with people who are facing the end of life is an education like no other! I have been stretched. I have learned. And most of all, I have been humbled by the people who have invited me into their lives.

What has been your most fun moment volunteering with Agrace?

My time has been filled with fun and laughter, but one of my most memorable visits was with a woman who lived most of her life in the South. She told me stories of how they caught bluegills, cleaned them and fried them for supper. She knew how to do this at a very young age. She said they would shoot wild hogs, and she could butcher one, make a ham and pickle ham hocks. I was astonished by her skills! Then the conversation turned to cooking turkeys. When she found out I throw away the neck and gizzards, she was outraged! She exclaimed, “Karen, you done crazy!” We just roared with laughter!

What advice would you give a new volunteer before their first patient visit?

I would say, “Take a moment to simply breathe and tell yourself that none of this is about you. You are a connection. You won’t do it ‘wrong’ because you came, and you care. Let yourself enjoy whatever happens.”

It’s Easier than Ever Before

If you are interested in volunteering with Agrace, you can visit Agrace.org/Volunteer or apply online here. Volunteer training is now offered online, so you can do it from home, whenever it’s convenient for you. It has never been easier to get started with Agrace!

Another #1 Finish for the Agrace Staff and Culture

In March, Agrace was named the #1 Top Workplace in the Large Employer category by the Wisconsin State Journal! It’s the second consecutive year we’ve earned this honor in southern Wisconsin, based on feedback from our staff about their experiences at work.

In the same competition, we received a special award for having outstanding managers! That’s vital—because excellent managers help retain high-performing staff. That means the very best people will be with Agrace, ready to care for you and your loved ones when you need our services. You can learn more about working for Agrace here.

made your will graphicIs making a will still on your to-do list?

Every day, Agrace’s staff help hundreds of hospice patients prepare medically, emotionally and spiritually for the end of life. But we know it’s also vital for every adult to prepare legally, for the well-being of those who will live on after them. At minimum, that means having an up-to-date will.

To encourage this kind of planning, Agrace has partnered with FreeWill. It’s an easy-to-use online resource that helps you make or update your plans in just 20 minutes—for free. A will is an essential document for designating who will care for dependent family members or pets, keeping your loved ones safe and creating peace of mind.

By using FreeWill, you’ll have the chance to incorporate a gift to Agrace in your plans. This step is completely optional, but it would ensure our care is available to people facing life-altering illnesses for generations to come.
