America is following the example of projects in Australia, Canada, China, and Europe, as plans for its first-ever ‘dementia village’ have been revealed.
The first of its kind in the states will launch in 2027 in Wisconsin, and follows a similar model thrived in the Netherlands.

A city council in Wisconsin approved one of the first steps for America’s first “dementia village,” designed to address the isolation and loneliness those living with Alzheimer’s disease may feel.
The $40 million project, spearheaded by Agrace, a Wisconsin nonprofit hospice and palliative care agency, is based on a concept from the Netherlands. Instead of a traditional memory care facility, people living with dementia will be part of a small community, living alongside neighbors with similar interests.

A Wisconsin-based nonprofit hospice, Agrace, is launching a new memory care initiative that includes a village for residents inspired by the Hogeweyk model in The Netherlands.
The hospice and palliative care provider recently announced the project, which will be dubbed as the Ellen & Peter Johnson Dementia Village at Agrace. Fueled with the Johnsons’ donation of $7 million, construction of the new dementia village will begin in spring 2026 and is slated to complete by fall 2027.

Agrace (Madison, Wis.), a nonprofit provider of hospice, palliative, and dementia care, expects to break ground this spring on the Ellen & Peter Johnson Dementia Village on its Madison campus, according to a news release.
The $40 million project is inspired by the Netherlands’ Hogeweyk Dementia Village and marks the first Hogeweyk-inspired dementia care community of its kind in the U.S., according to the provider.

With a $7 million donation from a Madison couple, a Dane County hospice company plans to build a new kind of memory care facility in Fitchburg with the goal of centering quality of life for those with dementia.
The “dementia village” will be the first of its kind in the United States, based on a model established in the Netherlands that prioritizes independence and autonomy for those living with diminished memory. The model steers away from hospital-like memory care units with strict security measures and, instead, will allow residents to move freely about the community and make independent decisions on how to go about their day.
