What is the time commitment to be a volunteer?
Most roles require a commitment of 50 volunteer hours within the first year of service. Volunteers typically volunteer 2 – 4 hours, either weekly or every other week. We have some one-time opportunities for groups or individuals in areas like our kitchen or gardens.

How long does the training process take?
This depends on a number of factors. Prior to starting their role, volunteers complete an application, phone interview, orientation, background checks, and a reference check. Many roles also require 2-step TB testing. Depending on a volunteer’s schedule and response time, this process can be as little as 2 weeks from initial phone call to starting to volunteer.

I don’t have any experience working in healthcare. Can I still volunteer?
Absolutely! We will provide you with the training that you need to feel comfortable and confident in your chosen volunteer role. We have a variety of roles, both working directly with our patients and families, as well as roles that support the overall organization.

I work professionally in health care. Do I still need to attend all of the training?
The roles and perspectives of volunteers and health care professionals are very different, so we require all of our volunteers who will be working with patients to attend the entire volunteer training to best understand their unique roles as volunteers. You may find that you are familiar with some portions of the information covered in training, but much of it will be new.

I don’t feel comfortable working directly with patients, but I’d like to help you out. Are there any other options available?
We have many opportunities where you’ll feel comfortable. At our Madison campus, we have volunteers who assist in the kitchen, gardens, flowers, administrative work, hospitality, the Doc Rock Cafe, and more! Additionally, Agrace’s four Thrift Stores (Janesville, Madison–East, Madison–West and the Home Store in Madison) are fantastic places to volunteer, donate and shop!
