Jefferson Award Winner, April 2017: Joanne Gladden

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

As reported by Amber Noggle of WKOW

OREGON (WKOW) — Joanne Gladden is a remarkable volunteer for Agrace, offering support and friendship to many in their final stages of life.

She’s been volunteering for six years, helping patients like 90-year-old Ruth Ann Smith, who’s suffering from heart failure.

“I’m in a lot of pain and I’ve been awfully, awfully sick. Joanne knows that,” says Ruth Ann. “I feel that God sent her to me. She is special.”

It’s a gift Joanne wanted to give, because she was once a patient herself, battling breast cancer.

A truckload of donated vinyl record albums has turned into drawers of cash for a Madison area nonprofit.

Agrace Hospice reported Friday that two of its Madison thrift stores have combined to sell more than $12,000 worth of record albums and the remaining stock of about 6,000 albums are now on sale at 10 for $1.

The sale of 21,000 albums began March 31 at Agrace Hospice Thrift Stores at 118 Junction Road on the Far West Side and on the East Side at 2402 East Springs Drive. About 40 to 50 people were in line at each store when they opened, with the west store selling 4,400 albums and the east store 3,608 albums on the first day. By the end of the weekend, total sales were over $11,000, which is equal to about one week of business for a typical Agrace Thrift Store, said Judy Purcell, retail manager for the nonprofit.

Jerry Roh spent years building a record collection of more than 21,000 vinyl albums. Its new owner hopes to reduce it to next to nothing in a few days.

At 10 a.m. Friday, Madison’s Agrace Thrift Stores will begin selling Roh’s donated collection in a Black Friday-like event featuring some of the biggest names — and several not-so-notable artists — in music in rock, country, religious, polka, children’s, classical and blues music.

“A lot of people are going to be interested in this,” said Dave Zero, owner of MadCity Music Exchange, 600 Williamson St. “It’ll be interesting to see what’s in there. For Agrace, I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic. People are going to be looking for gems, and I’m sure there will be plenty in there.”

Thursday, March 30, 2017

MADISON (WKOW) — A Platteville man donated his entire collection of vinyl records, more than 20,000, to a Madison thrift store.

After spending about 12 years collecting a massive amount on vinyl records, Jerry Roh decided it was time to get rid on them. So that’s when he contacted Agrace Thrift Store.

Store manager Robert Washburn said Roh called the store last month saying he wanted to help the organization.

The store received more than 300 boxes of records with everything from rock, pop, country, jazz, blues, and comedy. The collection includes albums, 78s, even a few 45s, for those old enough to remember them.

As reported by Shelly Birkelo in the Janesville Gazette

JANESVILLE—When Mark Buggs’ father was hospitalized with complications from cancer, Mark knew his family couldn’t give his dad the skilled care he needed at the end of his life.

When the family learned about Agrace Hospice & Palliative Care, 2901 N. Wright Road, it decided to transfer Bernard Buggs there. His stay lasted just 10 days before he died at 79.

“We knew they’d take care of him, and it was comforting to know he’d have 24-hour care,” Mark said.
Agrace allowed Mark’s family the precious gift of time to spend with their Bernard.
