Francis Thompson, an 86-year-old Prairie du Sac resident and life-long Green Bay Packers fan, had a wish come true October 15 when he was able to attend the Packers’ Monday Night Football game at Lambeau Field. Francis’ wish was made possible by his Baraboo-based nurse, CNA and social worker from Agrace HospiceCare.
“After a lifetime of watching the Packers play, this was Francis’ first time seeing them play in person,” said Tina Hohn, Thompson’s nurse case manager with Agrace. “Francis talks about it every time I see him. He says, ‘I still can’t believe I made it to the game!’”
The wish came about because Thompson had told his Agrace hospice care team that his end-of-life goal was to see the Packers in person. There was one problem, though: because of his terminal illness, he had trouble breathing, which would have made it impossible for him to withstand the weather conditions watching the game outdoors.
Hohn and Betty Glanzer, Thompson’s Agrace social worker, contacted Tracy Buglass of the Agrace Foundation to see if Agrace’s donor-funded Wish Program could help.
“We knew that if we could set Francis up in a box seat where he would be protected from the weather, he would be able to fulfill his wish,” said Buglass.
“Francis and his daughter sat in box seats in the end zone, and they could see everything, including the game-winning field goal!” said Glanzer. “There were a few challenges, but Francis’ daughter said that she would do it all over again, just to see the smile on her dad’s face!”
Agrace’s Baraboo-based hospice care team serves Sauk Prairie and the rest of Sauk and Columbia counties, from its 1670 South Boulevard office in Baraboo. In the five years since it expanded into the Baraboo area from Dane County, Agrace has grown to serve more than 100 local hospice patients and their families each day.
