Agrace has appointed Dr. Ruth M. Thomson as its new chief medical officer. Agrace is a nonprofit, community-supported health care organization providing hospice care, supportive care, senior care and grief support to people who are aging, ill or dying in southern Wisconsin.
In her new role, Thomson will lead and guide the performance of the team of hospice and palliative care physicians and nurse practitioners who provide care to the nearly 1,500 patients and clients Agrace serves daily. She will serve on the organization’s Executive Leadership Team and work to ensure that quality patient care is consistently delivered, meeting all agency guidelines, and state and federal standards.
Thomson joins Agrace from Elara Caring in Addison, Texas, one of the nation’s largest providers of home-based care, where she was national hospice medical director. There, she provided oversight and thought leadership to the medical directors and hospice physicians on staff. Previously, she served as medical director of the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. She is board certified in hospice and palliative medicine, internal medicine and as a hospice medical director.
As a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) Board of Directors, Thomson was recently awarded AAHPM’s 2021 Josefina B. Magno Distinguished Hospice Physician Award. This award recognizes a hospice medical director that provides the highest quality services and innovative programs and demonstrates exemplary dedication to the practice of palliative medicine in a hospice setting.
“Dr. Thomson is an esteemed professional in the national medical community,” said Agrace president and CEO Lynne Sexten. “With Agrace’s commitment to providing quality, compassionate care across the health care continuum, Dr. Thomson’s experience, expertise and strategic vision make her a commendable leader for Agrace’s medical team.”
For nearly two decades, Thomson has committed herself to practicing internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine, and hospice education. She has a master’s in business administration from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and received her medical degree in osteopathic medicine from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Thomson has held faculty appointments at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and has edited numerous publications.
