LGBT elders who use health care services from Agrace can feel confident knowing the local nonprofit agency cares about meeting their specific needs. As a follow-up to earning SAGECare Platinum Certification in 2022, Agrace has been recertified for 2024. At least 80 percent of Agrace’s staff have completed annual cultural competence training about the needs and concerns of the LGBT community.
SAGE, the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults, reports that a lifetime of facing discrimination, harassment and even violence often leads LGBT elders to become ill at an earlier age than their straight peers. That disparity concerns Agrace, a nonprofit health care organization whose main services—hospice, supportive (palliative) care, adult day care, grief support and non-medical senior care—are concentrated on serving elders across southern Wisconsin.
To better serve the needs of LGBT adults seeking its services, Agrace has partnered with SAGECare—a division of SAGE that provides competency training and consulting on LGBT aging issues. More than 80 percent of Agrace’s employees passed LGBT cultural competency training in 2023, earning SAGECare Platinum Certification for 2024.
“Agrace’s staff hold our support for the LGBTQ+ community at the highest levels of priority,” said Troy Polnitz, Agrace’s diversity, equity and inclusion manager. “This is why it’s important for Agrace to continue our commitment in training all our employees, every single year, on how to provide individualized care to older LGBTQ+ adults. To build inclusive environments, you must first learn about the many layers of those whom you serve. SAGECare has consistently assisted Agrace in that very mission.”
