More and more these days, we hear about high-profile people choosing hospice care. Too often though, it’s not until a few days or even hours before they die.
That’s why it is so remarkable that former President Jimmy Carter has been receiving hospice care for nine months. He is the epitome of what so many of us hospice workers know, and that research demonstrates — not only does hospice improve one’s quality of life, but it can also lengthen life.
Studies have shown hospice patients are happier, more socially engaged, in less pain and live an average of three months longer than those who did not receive hospice or only elected it in the last few days.
During his time on hospice, President Carter has received symptom and pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. He has been able to remain at home, and he has found solace in knowing his loved ones have received support. Fittingly, it was during his presidency that the hospice movement began in America as a model to bring dignity and humanity to end-of-life care.
As Wisconsin’s largest nonprofit hospice, we at Agrace appreciate the Carters’ vote of confidence in the work we do.
