Dr. Zorba Paster: Entering hospice should not be viewed as ‘giving up’

Friday, September 27, 2024

As reported by Wisconsin State Journal

Last year, I wrote about a hospice issue in answering a letter from a reader. I’d like to repeat that column, with some edits, a nip and tuck here and there, because of something that happened to a recent patient — he went into a terrible hospice.

Dear Doc: My mother is failing, with lots of medical problems that just have made her life miserable. She’s in pain all the time, she’s depressed, and her heart is failing. She was a lifelong smoker and is on oxygen. She can barely walk across the room without getting short of breath.

Her doctor said she would qualify for hospice. Most of the family is against it — they say mom is “giving up.” I think it might be a good idea, but I don’t want to go against what everyone else is saying. What do you think? — Sad reader

Agrace Grants Local 1990 Brewers Bat Boy a Final Baseball Wish

Thursday, September 12, 2024

In 1990, Will Natz was 10 years old and about to have his dream come true—he was going to be a Milwaukee Brewers bat boy. As he waited in the County Stadium dugout, he heard Bob Uecker announce his name. Until his death, Natz treasured the cassette tape that held a recording of that moment.

Earlier this year, due to his progressing illness and the need for supplemental oxygen, Natz—a lifelong baseball fan—doubted he would get to another Brewers game in person. That was until his Agrace Hospice Care social worker, Kristin Kalpinski and nurse Jill Cooley saw a chance to make his wish come true with assistance from Agrace’s Wish program.

“In 2018, we attended a ‘get-to-know-Agrace’ meeting,” said Todd and Shari Nelson in a joint statement. “We were so impressed by the dedication and compassion of the staff we met. Little did we know that just a few months later, we would need Agrace Hospice Care’s services.
