The Veterans Task Force at Agrace Hospice & Palliative Care is collecting new socks for distribution to Madison-area homeless veterans, as part of Agrace’s volunteer support of Madison’s Stand Down Day. The community is encouraged to drop off sock donations at the reception desk at Agrace Hospice & Palliative Care, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison. Donations will be accepted until noon on Friday, October 27.
Donated socks will be distributed at the Wayne D. Horner Memorial Veterans Stand Down Day 2017, on Saturday, October 28, at the Salvation Army of Dane County, 3030 Darbo Drive, Madison. From 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. nurses from Agrace will provide veterans foot care and hand out socks in partnership with the Madison Area Care for the Homeless (MACH OneHealth). Homeless veterans are also invited to come and receive food, clothing, health care services, housing and employment assistance, and education about end-of-life care.
“Caring for veterans has been one of the most rewarding parts of my nursing career. I find veterans-men and women alike–to be courageous, honest and wise–usually accompanied with a great sense of humor and humility,” said Carolyn Virginia, Agrace RN and Veterans Task Force member. “I firmly believe that veterans are the reasons for many of our cherished freedoms. They deserve our upmost respect, and it’s an honor to be able to give them the dignity of foot care and new socks at Stand Down Day.”
Agrace is a Level 2 partner in the We Honor Veterans program, a collaboration of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization with the Department of Veterans Affairs to help improve the care veterans receive from hospice and palliative care providers. The program teaches respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgement to help hospice caregivers comfort patients who have a history of military service—and possibly physical or psychological trauma.
