Local people who are in the final months of life will soon have a new choice for high-quality, in-home hospice care, and area residents are invited to be part of the service as hospice volunteers.
Agrace Hospice Care, the largest Wisconsin-based nonprofit hospice, is expanding its southern-Wisconsin service area to include Waukesha County in January 2022. For more than 40 years, Agrace has offered end-of-life care and related services to people of all ages across southern Wisconsin. The agency is opening a new location in Oconomowoc as a home base for staff. Agrace’s other locations include regional offices in Platteville and Baraboo, and hospice inpatient units and residences in Madison and Janesville.
Local volunteers are needed to make companionship visits to hospice patients throughout Waukesha County. Volunteer schedules are flexible, and free training is provided. No previous health care experience is necessary.
“Volunteers may be asked to read to the patient, play a game, run an errand, make a snack, or simply be there as a caring presence,” says Andy Boryczka, Agrace director of employee and volunteer engagement. “Our volunteers have a special opportunity to make life just a little bit easier for patients and families.”
Agrace will host an orientation and training Monday, November 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., to help new local volunteers prepare for their roles. Before attending this orientation, prospective volunteers must complete an application and an interview with Agrace’s staff to discuss their skills and interests. To register call (608) 327-7163, or visit Agrace.org/Volunteer to complete the application.
